Minister Alexandre de Moraes from the Supreme Court (STF) has requested that social media platform X (previously known as Twitter) pay a fine of R $ 8 million for failing to comply with court orders, such as providing registration data for blogger Allan dos Santos. The decision also instructed the Federal Police (PF) to proceed with investigations into digital militias.
X is fined an additional R $ 8 million.
The procedure began in October 2024 when journalist Juliana Dal Piva took action by bringing the case to court after alleging that Allan shared screenshots of a supposed conversation with her in X.
Juliana claimed that the images were not authentic. She allegedly attempted to persuade the blogger against sharing specific content and agreements between the Federal Police and the STF.
In July 2024, Moraes found that X deleted the blogger’s account and shared details. Yet, the social media platform stated that the “X operators do not share data amongst themselves” and the user “lacks a technical link to Brazil”.
The blogger is currently residing in the United States due to an outstanding preventive arrest order issued in 2021 by Moraes.
The minister incurred daily fines of R $ 100 thousand for not complying with the court order to share the data in October 2024, leading to a total fine amount of R $ 8 million.
Allan dos Santos’ defense team stated that they have been unable to access the investigation records in the Supreme Court for over 40 months. The blogger’s assets and communication platforms are restricted, preventing them from receiving any recent updates on the investigation.
